Every time I step on stage (or into a strategy session), I’m reminded: the most powerful brands aren’t just built—they’re lived. Whether you’re leading a nonprofit, launching a career, or leveraging AI, how you show up matters. Today, let’s talk about Personal Branding for College Ready Students—a branding approach designed specifically for college-ready students. It challenges them to see themselves not just as future employees, but as leaders of their own brand, even before graduation.
Every time I walk into a room to speak with high school or college students, I’m struck by one truth:
No one is really teaching them how to brand themselves.
We teach them how to write résumés, apply for scholarships, and sit through mock interviews—but not how to think like a brand. Not how to craft a personal presence that speaks before they do. Not how to own their reputation like it’s the most valuable asset they have—because it is.
So, I created a talk that does just that:
The Brand of YOU.
This isn’t about business cards or logos. It’s about character, competence, and consistency. It’s about seeing yourself as a walking brand—a CEO of your own life, career, and future.
Here’s what I teach students to consider:
1. You’re Always Marketing Something
Whether you’re in class, on campus, at work, or online—people are forming impressions. What do you want them to walk away with? Personal branding for the college ready student requires you to control the narrative, not let someone else do it for you.
2. Personal Branding Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait
You don’t have to be the loudest or most outgoing person to have a strong presence. You just need to be clear on your values, your goals, and the energy you bring into a room (or a Zoom).
3. Character Is the Most Underrated Career Tool
People hire who they trust. Students often think they need to “look the part”—but real influence starts with integrity. Your personal brand isn’t just what you post—it’s what you consistently deliver.
4. First Impressions Start Before You Speak
From your LinkedIn profile to your email signature, your brand is already saying something. I show students how to make sure it’s saying the right things—professionally, authentically, and confidently.
I created this talk because I want our young people to understand something no one told me until much later:
You don’t get ready for opportunity. You brand yourself so opportunity recognizes you!
Let’s help the next generation stand out for the right reasons—by teaching them how to lead with intention, show up with purpose, and build a brand that speaks for them.
